Automation modules typically consist of a control unit that manages the automation process, sensors and actuators that interact with the physical environment, and communication interfaces that allow the module to communicate with other systems or devices. The control unit is responsible for processing data from sensors, making decisions based on predefined algorithms or user-defined logic, and sending commands to actuators to perform the required actions.

One example of an industrial automation module is the ABB UNITROL 1010, which is an automatic voltage regulator (AVR) designed for excitation and synchronization applications in power systems. This module is part of the UNITROL 1000 series, known for its reliability and efficiency in maintaining stable and consistent power supply. The UNITROL 1010 operates within a range of 0.5 to 99% of its rated voltage, ensuring that the power system operates within safe and optimal conditions. It is equipped with digital inputs and outputs, allowing for a wide range of device connections and supports a significant number of digital I/Os, enhancing its flexibility and adaptability to various power system configurations.
