Gigabit Ethernet has several physical layer standards, including 1000BASE-T, which is the most popular variant. 1000BASE-T allows Gigabit Ethernet transmission over unshielded twisted pair (UTP) category 5, 5e, or 6 cabling.

There are also other physical layer standards for Gigabit Ethernet using optical fiber (1000BASE-X) and shielded balanced copper cable (1000BASE-CX) .

100 Gigabit Ethernet (100GbE) is a technology that transmits Ethernet frames at a rate of 100 gigabits per second (100 Gbps). It offers significantly higher speeds than 10 Gigabit Ethernet.

100GbE has different standards and port types with various optical and electrical interfaces. It supports both short distances over twinaxial cable and longer distances over fiber.
